Hobbiton Movie Set
During the recording Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy a movie set to resemble Hobbiton was set up near the small town of Matamata on the North Island. It was built on a piece of farmland, Alexander Farm, with only minimal adjustments to the environment. After the recordings the farmland went back to being a sheep and beef farm, but the hobbit village was kept as a tourist attraction and can be seen exactly as it appeared in the movies. There are tours covering the area so you can enjoy the atmosphere of the hobbits. In The Green Dragon Inn one can get refreshments. One can have a relaxing meal in The Shires Rest Cafe and get souvenirs in The Shire Store. One can also bottle feed the lambs and have other experiences with the still active farm.
